It is custom for the DĂșnedain to turn their faces westward before meals, to Westernesse that once was. They bid us to do the same, and it reminded me of my home beyond the mountains; hobbits taking their elevenses in comfortable holes under hills.

My dear Sam said something about lettuce then, and something about rain. But sometimes these things slip my mind. Like rain on a wilted lettuce I think he said, like hope.

[ It's not very often that he catches the hobbit in mid thought, but it seems that he has. Careful not too disturb him too much, Aragorn listens fully to what the halfling says and smiles. ]

Is Sam always so poetic?

NĂșmenor. [It's said softly, almost to herself.] That they honor it still does not surprise me.

[But then she shakes her head and laughs herself out of the reminiscence.]
